Mom's History
Mom's Pie House was created, from scratch, in December 1984 by Anita Nichols, "Mom" to Laurie, Teak, Erica and Jesse. She had a vision - to make a delicious, homemade pie from the already famous Julian apples. When she first opened, in the old Julian Cafe building, the bakery measured a whopping 10 by 22 feet, and had very cozy seating for two! Mom used one small electric oven for all of her baking, and peeled her own apples using a counter-mounted peeler.
Mom's flaky crusts and not-too-sweet fillings were a hit with locals and tourists alike, and a line snaking outside the door of the tiny bakery became commonplace. In the fall of 1987, Mom began to expand the bakery to include a larger kitchen and more seating. She also started baking cookies, cinnamon rolls, and other sweet homemade treats.
Twenty years of hard work later, Mom is still rolling out those flaky piecrusts in the front window, smiling at the eager, hungry faces peering in at her, and is still creating a high quality, mouth-watering, homemade pie!
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there really a Mom?
Yes! There really is a mom. She's lived in Julian for the past 24 years and counting. She's raised four wonderful children, all of whom graduated from Julian High School, and worked at the shop to earn enough dough for college.
How many pies do you make?
Well, it depends on the day and the season. During the fall "Apple Days" we might make over a 1000 pies per weekend day. And that's plenty!
What kind of apples do you use?
Generally, Mom likes to use Jonathans and Granny Smiths, because they have a great taste, good texture, and hold up to baking just right. However, Mom's will use almost any local Julian Apple when they are in season. Jona-Gold, Arkansas Black, Empire, Golden Delicious, Pippin, and Macintosh are a few of the local varietals Mom's uses during Julian Apple Days!
Are all of the pies made here?
Absolutely, all of our pies are made fresh at Mom's. Just come to the window on Main St. and watch the bakers putting the pies together.
Can I buy a Mom's pie anywhere else?
Mom really believes the best way to ensure a quality pie every time, is to sell pies at her shop. Mom wants to know she sent you home with the freshest pie possible. However,  if you can't make it to Julian, Don's Market in Santa Ysabel (open 6am to 8pm) offers a selection of fresh Mom's pies.   Mom's Pies are also available for pickup in La Mesa for Thanksgiving Special Order (See Below).
Is there a line today? How can I skip it?
There could be a line depending on the day you visit. However, if all you would like are whole pies to go, we encourage you to call ahead and pre-order your whole pie(s). When you visit to pick up your pre-order, we will have your order ready for you at the counter. Let one of the employees at the registers know you are picking up an order. No waiting in line.  Easy as pie!
Mom's Thanksgiving turkey express (Pies delivered to the City)?
Mom's makes a special pie delivery to La Mesa the day before Thanksgiving for people who Pre-order at least 3 days before delivery day. Pies can be picked-up between 10-2 at the Warm Hearth (Fireplace and patio store). The Warm Hearth is located at 8748 La Mesa Blvd. Directions.
Can I freeze my Mom's pie?
Yes! Take pie out of the box, completely wrap pie in plastic wrap or use a large Zip-Lock bag, squeeze out excess air and place pie back in box. Place pie in freezer for up to 6 months! To re-heat pie, un-wrap, let pie thaw to room temp, place in oven at 225 degrees until desired temp.
How long will the pies last?
1-2 days on the counter, about 1 week in the fridge, and 6 months. frozen
Is there snow in Julian right now?
Um...let me look. Nope, but maybe later. Check the weather, or call the Julian Chamber.
Do people really live here?
Yes Sir! This here is a real live town, complete with schools, churches, post office, library, and one 4-way stop! Most people either live up the road or down the road, but some live out yonder.
